Folkdance

With her veil.... looks better I think
I was messing around trying to design some new X-Men members that I ended up just creating new characters for myself. This is Folkdance from the Philippines.

Her design is based off the costumes worn in Filipino folkdances (where her codename is derived from), namely Singkil. I liked the dress like suit and the "head cape" (veil).

She is supposed to be super graceful/ agile/ and other abilities I haven't quite settled with yet.... Kinda like a Filipina Psylocke. It took a few tries to get her to the point that I like...

Without her veil
Quite different from a previous Filipiniana design I did. I'll draw her again in action poses.

Igorot Etching, Level 4-5-6

These are the last levels of my Etching. This one has shaded on top of the hatchings.

Igorot Etching, Level 3

I really like how the girl came out

Level 3 has the hatching on it to show more lighting and shadow compared to the previous level. The hatching came out light because the acid I put the plate in was a little weak.

The guy's tattoos are cool too

Igorot Etching, Level 2

The greatest thing about Etching is that you can work on Levels. On this one, I added the tattoos on the body and details on wrap.

I'll post the next level soon. I'm really having one with how these are coming out and seeing how it comes out from the first level to the next.

Igorot Etching, Level 1

I printed a few, since after I do the rest of the "levels" there is no turning back...

It's really nice to see the progression from the actual Igorot drawing and the rest of the "levels". Off to do Level 2...

Igorot (Filipino Tribal)

I started a new Etching project depicting indigenous Filipinos. I used old photos of Igorots for reference.

I was pretty pleased of how this came out. I made the heads bigger on the etching

When I sketched these out, I fully intended on inking right on top of them. But I really liked how the sketch came out, so I inked over a tracing paper.

I liked how intense his eyes came out

I really liked how the tattoos serve as great details to the piece. I'll post the plates and Etching prints soon. I started the male and the prints came out great.

I ended up altering the face a bit on the etching plate as the eyes/ nose got wonky

This is kind of a departure of what I usually do, which is pretty cool. I also feel like I'm getting the hang of using a brush pen.

I made the jewelry and tattoes different color as a guide for myself

Unsung Filipinos (Test)

A project test.

This time utilizing some "background" photos I took during my 2009 trip back to the Philippines. I really liked how the layout of the electric posts and wires came out. It's also gonna have a bunch of monochromatic character (s) on the foreground featuring Filipino characters.

A street vendor and her kids.

Another street vendor and a bunch of street kids.

A policeman letting a bunch of kids crossing the street.

I'll post the final ones when I finish. I might attempt to silkscreen these too.

Pinoy Tribal Test

I did this during a slow day at my internship...

It started out as a body test and then I ended up covering him with all these markings. They are based off Philippine Tribal tattoo. I thought it looked pretty cool. What do you think?
