After completing my first silkscreen book, I decided to do another one.

This time, smaller and with less colors.

"Truce" only has 2 colors and is printed on recycled kraft paper.

I think it works great!

Right now, I'm folding and stapling the books. I'll post the finished product soon.

This is my first silkscreen book- LUK ZEPHYR AND THE CURSE OF THE HYDRA.

I hope you like it. The entire process was tedious, great, and pain staking. I learned a lot creating this that will hopefully make future silkscreen books much easier and smoother to do. I'm working on a new one right now- just 2 colors. In the meantime, check out my other books.

Halftone Silkscreen Print

After printing 7-8 colors on my silkscreen book (which I will post fully soon), I wanted to see if I can get away with printing the next ones using CMYK halftones. This way there are only 4 colors- Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black.

It was a great idea in theory, since it was less work printing. But, man, registering the halftones are a pain! The process does give a different look with the print, though.

I used an old digital illustration (featuring the War Sadhu) to test it out. Right now, I'm sketching out the new prints, but I haven't decided which way I'm gonna print them- halftones or solid colors.

Jpeg of the Digital guide

Another new print! I'm cranking these out the last few days. This was a revamp of an old ink drawing that I did in an Inking class.

This print is for sale for $5 and measures 16x12.5

"Flower Girl" is a 5-color silkscreen print (blue, pink, white, black, and silver transparency) on craft paper. The paper was a bit crinkled and the paint made some of the layers a bit shiny. But, regardless, I'm really happy how it came out!

It started out in Photoshop. I use a Cintiq connected to my laptop. It's a bit screwey sometimes, since the 2 monitors show different colors. My laptop always show the duller colors.

After creating a digital guide (each color is set on separate layers), each layer is turned black and white. I, then, print them on tracing vellum to become my separations.

I finally finished that print I was working on a few weeks ago. It came out really nice, but due to some registration and transparency problems- I only have an Edition of 10 (6 of which doesn't have the last screen yet).

I had my reservations at first, but really liked how it came out with the outlines

Since I'm having problems with the Zephyr book, I decided to start a silkscreen print. It only took a few hours to finish because I had the colors pretty much separated from a previous digital coloring attempt.

It's great to see how the colors turn out once printed, since it's always a little different that what I originally intended.

There's one layer left to do, a gradient, but here's a preview!

Tug of War, Accordian Book

I did 3 variations blue/ yellow, yellow/ blue, and "bootleg" white-- ha!

I finally finished my first Silkcreen Accordian Book. I tried to make it easy for myself, since the end product would have a panaromic feel to it. So, I decided to do a Tug of War.

I printed in Vanilla, Cream, Wheat, and White paper to see the difference.

I used 6 screens/ colors- orange, blue, yellow, pink, and dark red for the outline. I did them with transparency, so that where the colors overlapped- they created green, darker green, purple, and brown. It's always great to do that. You get more colors and save yourself time!

I did run into a few problems, mostly with registration. You can on some of these images, where the colors didn't perfectly meet. Where the orange, yellow, blue, and pink overlapped- was supposed to be brown (the hair and the rope).

I designed it so that the 2 teams had "team colors". The first team had dark green and green. The other had blue and purple. This was inspired by retro swimsuits.

I also got rid of the outside outlines and only left the ones inside or where the colors met. I thought that was a nice touch.

At the end of the book, also had the female audience. I made them pink and purple, so they sank a bit on the background.

I continued them on the back of the accordian book. It was kind of an after-thought, but I thought it added to the look of the book.

These are the "guides" I did in Photoshop to kind of test how the colors would overlap or look. Which of course, didn't exactly translate into silkscreen since the silkscreen paint have a different tone.

These were the inks before I removed the outlines.

I've been a busy bee lately... I got a new job in the city. I'm taking another silkscreen class (focusing on making books). I've been playing Marvel Vs Capcom 3- which is awesome. And, I finally finished putting the first level of colors on the brush pen drawing I did a few weeks ago.

I really liked how it looks when you're just looking at the shapes of the colors and not the outline. This is the style I'm trying out for the silkscreen book I'm working on

The Monks of Enlightened

'Finished the former digital coloring project, coloring a sketch drawing. It took a few try outs and layers to get the finished product. I think it looks pretty cool from where it started.

I really like how the girl came out

Level 3 has the hatching on it to show more lighting and shadow compared to the previous level. The hatching came out light because the acid I put the plate in was a little weak.

Trying out some watercolors, which I haven't done since highschool (Class of '02... eek). I was trying to remember the techniques, but couldn't really and basically just winged it.

2 separate paintings, overlayed with each other and the lineart made the "finished" fish

The purpose is to really just grab the textures and later utilize them in digital coloring on Photoshop.

This one only has the watercolor layers combined and the other is the photoshop layer

I inked the sketch on tracing paper, but at the end the sketch matched better with the watercolors.

This is the "traditional" part of my current digital coloring project. I scanned the various stages of the drawing and will layer them together in the computer later, while altering the line art color, etc.

It started with a quick ink thumbnail, then a sketch on watercolor paper

The sketch is then inked, scanned, then inked the shades again

After I inked this, I realized that the brush pen I used (Staedler Mars Graphic 3000) was not waterproof. So, I decided to experiment on it and create some slight washes by running water through it. Then, I watercolored the *back* using a lightbox.

The purpose for this is to create *textures* that I will later utilize to color in Photoshop... It will make a lot more sense once I actually do it. But here's a little preview:

The greatest thing about Etching is that you can work on Levels. On this one, I added the tattoos on the body and details on wrap.

I'll post the next level soon. I'm really having one with how these are coming out and seeing how it comes out from the first level to the next.

It started out as a digital file, figuring out which color goes where and which color blended with another color to make another color. Yeah, it was confusing but I eventually found my color guide.

Keggus the Silkscreen Prints

Inspired by vintage Gladiator movie and Pulp posters

Finally got around to take a pictures of these prints of my second silkscreen project. It's about 16x20 and has about 9 screens. Being only the second time I'm doing this, I didn't realize you can overlay the colors to make more colors. I made a screen PER color, which was insane.

There were a few mishaps along the way, but it's simply part of the learning curve. Mis-registration of the screens is the most common mistake.

On some, mis-registration works for it because "that's silkscreen"

Igorot (Filipino Tribal)

I started a new Etching project depicting indigenous Filipinos. I used old photos of Igorots for reference.

I was pretty pleased of how this came out. I made the heads bigger on the etching

When I sketched these out, I fully intended on inking right on top of them. But I really liked how the sketch came out, so I inked over a tracing paper.

I really liked how the tattoos serve as great details to the piece. I'll post the plates and Etching prints soon. I started the male and the prints came out great.

I ended up altering the face a bit on the etching plate as the eyes/ nose got wonky

This is kind of a departure of what I usually do, which is pretty cool. I also feel like I'm getting the hang of using a brush pen.

New Silkscreen (in the works)

In the process of doing this new silkscreen project. I printed 2 of the 5-6 colors so far. I'm getting pretty excited since I haven't silkscreened since December.

Silkscreen looks a lot cooler with bright colors.

This is the silkscreen of the first figure from the last post. I'm not sure I'll print the others... This one took way too long to prep, in terms of the color layers.

Some color combos looked better than others

I printed the image in various paper colors to experiment on how the final print will look like. I'll post the finalized print soon.

There are at least 3 more colors that goes here.

Fashion Try-Out

Something I'm trying to Silkscreen... 'still trying to figure out the color combinations. I inked it using a Pentel Pocket Brush Pen, which is super awesome.

Fig.01~ I added the poodle since it seemed like it needed it.

Fig.02~ The face came out a little awkward, but I fixed it on the final.

Fig. 03~ I might change the clothing design. Not happy with this.

I'll post the colored and silkscreen version, once I finish them.

Started Etching

EDIT: The Etching plate after a "clean wipe" of ink

So, I started my Etching (Printmaking) class and I'm having a blast. It's completely different (yet the same) compared to Silkscreen. I wanted to take this class because I was curious of how old, fantasy master drawings were made.

EDIT: This is what the plate looks like once I etched with a quick drawing.

I had to put a substance (hard ground) on a metallic plate and then etch/ draw on it after it dried. Almost, like a scratchboard. This process was a little iffy because you could not erase anything once it's etched on the ground on the plate... so all the mistakes could not be "digitally" fixed. Usually in Silkscreen, I prepare the image digitally before burning it into the screen. Anyways, after the etching is complete the metallic plate needs to go on acidic water so that the etching on the hard ground on top of the plate gets burned into the plate.

The first print... I didn't wipe away as much ink.

Then, after cleaning it it's ready to print! The thing with Etching, though, is that you can technically only good print at a time. You have to wipe ink at your plate each time. If you don't wipe ink and simply printed again- you're left with a "ghost print". Which can't always be bad. That's way every Etching print will more than likely look different each time.

The "ghost print"... this is way ink needs to be put on the plate after each printing.

While very interesting, Etching does have a few cons compared to Silkscreen-- introducing color isn't always very possible as the color is usually spread into the plate. Also, you have to wet and blot the paper before each printing.

Attempt on color didn't work out as well...

Trying to put color needs to be very careful. I tried using cotton buds to put some blue on the eyes and ended up wiping off the color on the outline.

The 2nd print after adding more lines/ hatching into the plate.

Pros- it takes fine lines really well. When I did fine lines with Silkscreen, it didn't print out as well. Also, you can keep adding into the plate. If you put hard ground again, you can re-etch more stuff in it and then print.

The 2nd "ghost print" from the revised plate.

Since I came to the class without any idea of what would looked good as etching, I had to quickly sketch this out. Which didn't exactly come out as great as I would like it to be. The nose was a bit big for the face. The lips are awkward. I went overboard on the hair and the size of the plat threw me off on the proportions of the upper body and neck. Yeah, I'm a little self-critical. But again these are things that I learn NOT to do on the next Etching project.

War Elephant (Trials and Error)

A silkcreen project that didn't quite work out as well as I had hoped... Studying the layers of body systems. I only drew one side and simply mirrored it. These are the original uncolored drawings done in Photoshop.

The Armor (supposed to be a "War Elephant" but looked like a Lion).

The Body (underneath the Armor, inspired by Indian Wrestlers).

The Muscle (it'd be cool once this is colored with shades of red).

The Skeleton (probably not perfectly correct).

I was hoping to print them on tracing paper/ vellum or something clear so you can see through the systems. But it didn't print as well... the paper started to ripple with the paint.

This is how they are printed, ready to be folded into a booklet.

Once folded, you can see through the images on top of each other.

Once I figure out how to print this and not crumple the paper, I'll do more colors for each.

I think I'll need to print this on acetate through a printer and then staple the layers together instead if manually screen printing it. Folding the paper, also made the thing unnecessarily thick. Oh, well... trial and error.

Hileva the Sphinx

This was my third silkscreening project. Utilizing a Sphinx with a pretty basic 3-4 color set-up (blue, yellow, magenta, and a light overtone).

The digital illustration shows the intended colors.

As you can see, the colors didn't match perfectly with the digital guide like my previous attempts. But nonetheless it looks great.

This has 3 colors overlaying each other with a very light overtone that is barely seen on top.

These were the various stages of the silkscreen process and the combination of the inks once overlayed with each other. 2 color combinations of blue, magenta, and yellow.

Blue and Magenta made Purple.

Magenta and Yellow made a light Orange.

Yellow and Blue made Green.

And these were some of the accidents that happened when I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing... Kinda cool-looking abstract prints.

It's kinda cool where the colors overlapped creating new colors and darker tones.

The overtone on this was a bit more noticeable, but the screens never lined up.

I'll eventually sell the good ones in an Etsy shop or something along with the others.

Unsung Filipinos (Test)

A project test.

This time utilizing some "background" photos I took during my 2009 trip back to the Philippines. I really liked how the layout of the electric posts and wires came out. It's also gonna have a bunch of monochromatic character (s) on the foreground featuring Filipino characters.

Another test on overlaying colors for a silkscreen project. There are 6 transparency colors that, when overlays each other, creates new colors.

This one is done in Photoshop. Undone and is simply a test.

The sketch has a more detailed face which I'll ink later on once I get the color tests right.

I have a series of these kind of sketches. Mixing realistic and stylistic.

This is the finished digital illustration with text.

I have no clue what the name means. I had to come up with a name at the last minute... This was my second Silkscreen project. The "guide" was illustrated by hand, scanned to, and colored in Photoshop.

The finished art without text yet. 'Sat on it for awhile cuz I didn't know what to call it/ him.

Close-up. I really liked the detail of the coloring.

During the Summer and the Fall, I was getting obsessed with vintage movie posters and pulp magazine covers. So, I thought that I could emulate that coloring and layout style with silkscreening. I did 10-12 separate color screens on this poster which was way too ambituous. But a great learning experience nonetheless of what NOT to do next time...

The sketch version.

This is the actual silkscreen. The way it works is that you have to print one color at a time. For every color, you have to make a "screen" through a grueling process. The colors and details did not come out as crisp and exact as the digital illustration as it was pretty hard to mix the silkscreen paints to match the guide. Some of the finer details did not match up perfectly, but it still came out pretty cool. I'll probably sell it sometime during the summer.

I did about 50 prints, but only about 30 came out great.

An unfinished animation I did when I interned at MTV during the first half of my thesis year. I never got the timing at the end quite right, but I still liked how it came out. They are put together with Adobe After Effects. I especially liked the multi-eyed monsta.

During the internship, I was asked to make a 10-15 sec animation but I didn't get the timing quite right.

Here are the character/ background designs for it. They are mostly done in Adobe Illustrator with the background shading done in Adobe Photoshop... This is before I learned about Flash.

Freelance gig creating mnemonics that depict memory points that will hopefully help people remember vocabulary words. It's mostly recommended for SAT Prep.

This is a collage of cards I've done.

If you have an iPhone/ iPod Touch, there is a free ClyCards app. You can see more at http://www.clycards.com. The way they work is that there is a word in the picture that helps you associate it with the vocabulary word.

MILIEU (n.) atmosphere: "I like the atmosphere and the *menu*."

Hell Hath No Fury...

This was my first silkscreening project. A basic 3-color print.

These are the digital illustration that served as my "color guide".

The way it works is that for every color of the picture you have to make a "screen" for it. You can overlap the colors to make new ones, but for this one it was a basic 3 color: light, medium, and dark magenta. But, unfortunately once you get into the printing, it's hard to perfectly match the colors of the silkscreen paint to the digital guide.

This is a photo of the actual print.

After a series of emulsion coating, dark room drying, light shooting, actual printing, and screen washing (there's a LOT of steps), this is the final product. Once I printed, the light and medium magenta ended up becoming orange. The darkest ended up being dark brown that looks black. But either way, it looks great and not bad for a first attempt.

The drawing, done in photoshop, was supposed to be another attempt to digital paint a portrait. This time of supermodel, Caroline Trentini. But I never got around to finish it and simply prepped the sketch for the silkscreen.

I'll probably end up selling the prints in the future. once I figure out how to do that . The next 2 projects were a whole lot more ambitious, but was still a trial-and-error kind of deal for this first timer.

3 Year Absence?! geez...

Well, I'm back... The last 3 years (eek) has been weird...

I held back on drawing on that first 2 years and really just saved up. Which was my basic plan a year after school and interning. Here and there, I got a few small freelance work that kept me busy but nothing that led to something major. But it was great experience in terms of the work process in the field. I also sketched out various designs and wrote down notes on various story/ character ideas that, mostly, only made sense to me. But nothing really completely finished.

After a great freelance gig, I was able to afford a Cintiq which makes future digital works much easier.

For the latter of that 2 years, I worked a full-time non-art job and got great benefits that got me medical and dental coverage. But I had to work a lot of hours that left me exhausted, depressed, and really in no mood to draw. Before I completely lost my passion to draw, I decided to go part-time so I can focus on drawing again. It sucks giving up the benefits, but in the long run, I want to be an Artist, first and foremost. And ever since, I've been doing great work that expanded my artistic range. Which is great, because I never felt like I got my point across in my art when I was in school.

I was always leaning towards what was going to get me a good grade and what I felt like my peers wanted to see. But unfortunately, at least for me, what got me a good grade and what my peers liked was not always what I wanted to show. I regret not sticking to what I liked and not being true to my creative instincts, but now I get to pursue that.

These digital illustrations ended up becoming my "design" for silkscreen, but the colors on the final prints did not come out the same.

One of the types of art I was always fascinated about was Silkscreening. It was great since it was completely different from animation and digital illustration. Everything was done by hand- through screenboards, paints, and different kinds of liquids/ chemicals. The process is definitely very hands-on and I got the hang of it towards the end of the class. I only did a few works during the class, but will pursue it again this summer when I take another Printmaking class.

I also got into vintage movie posters and pulp magazine covers. The way that they were painted and laid out. Right now, that's my primary style-inspiration on my personal projects combining it with my usual stylistic/ anime/ comic book-y style which I'll share soon. Also, thinking of taking a digital painting class.

Wow, almost three months of no blogging. (EDIT: first image is updated)

My job and internship takes up most of my time and energy, so I can't really put these out consistenly. But, I've been working on my "pet project" on and off. Mostly drawing nude figures of different body types, writing character profiles, premise, etc. Here's a "small" glimpse.

The scans are kinda crappy after I cropped them together. But, they'd look cool once inked and colored. I'm still trying to figure out of what coloring style I should do them in. I've done the sloppy painting, vector coloring, illustrator+photoshop, markers, etc... SO, I dunno how I'm gonna do these.

Just practicing in Flash again... I wanted to see how I would fare in coloring and inking. I thought this came out pretty cool. I liked how I could easily separate the colors by creating a line on top of it. And I could easliy remove that line at will.

Last night was the big Season Finale of Project Runway 3...

HIGH-RESOLUTION PIC

Uli Herzner is awesome. I was really hoping for her to win. I wasn't a big fan of hers in the beginning, but she grew on me. She's a great designer with an amazing eye for prints and colors. Very inspiring. She was consistent throught the show and most importantly, she got herself into the Final Four solely based on her talent. Some of the finalists, I felt, only made it as far as they did, cuz they supplied the show with soundbites and manufactured drama. She got robbed.

Jeffrey Sebelia won. I was actually rooting for him in the beginning when the cast was revealed. I like his Cosa Nostra work. I love deconstructed clothes (i.e. Jay McCarroll), but his work always looked poorly constructed. He was such a jerk; whining and bitching all the time, causing unnecessary drama... blegh. He was only nice when it's convenient. And the construction quality of his final collection was suspiciously inconsistent. But whatever, he got tons of airtime because of stupid shit, got the "Asshole"-spot in the finals, and won.

Laura Bennett was a one-note-- an AMAZING, Masterful, one-note. But a one-note nonetheless. She catered exclusively to her particular type of customer. She was a character, pregnant, drama maker, soundbite machine, and had a great story to tell. In reality tv land, that's gold... she had to be in the finals. To me, there were other versatile designers.

Michael Knight's great. Like Uli, he got himself in the finals based on TALENT. He was the fan favorite, but his collection was a dissappointment. Compared to other Hip Hop designers-- his work paled in comparison. Regardless, he's still awesome.

Back to Uli... I LOVED her 12-look SS07 collection. I decided to illustrate 5 of her print dresses from her final collection. I love how they flowed down the runway and the how the printed fabrics rippled. She chose the hottest models, too. The last piece was actually a bathing suit... but I drew with the dress still on. I wish Uli the best of luck in the future!!! Can't wait for Season 4!!!

I drew all of the artworks on paper, scanned them in, and painted them in photoshop. The prints were tricky to do. I ended up doing them in layers upon layers... overlaying them on top of each other. I hope you like them... they're my tribute to Uli.

My Wacom Tablet suddenly stopped working... it was working just a few minutes ago... and I have so much stuff I want to paint and learn on it... The damn light won't go on whenever I try to plug it in even with the installation CD.

Another Model Portrait

So, I tried another portrait painting. This one came off more finished looking than the first one.

I've always been afraid on trying portrait painting. I can't paint, but its great to see that I can do it. A little more practice then I'll get used to it. On this piece I tried doing it differently than the first one. I sketched out the guidelines of the face, referencing from a runway picture I stumbled on a google search. Then, I put in the basic colors on a different layer.

This time around, the "multiply" on the pen is off. This meant the colors wont be belnding on top of each other as it did on the Omahyra painting. I used solid colors of more varying shades, overlaying them on top of each other. Then, I added the shades of the background.

I, then, smoothen everything out, or mostly everything, to come up with the first picture above. It's almost done. I just need to perfect the tones and make the facial features more distinguished. What do you think? Does this style of painting look better than the Omahyra one?

This is my very first time painting in Photoshop... It was weird. Not used to it. This one is a little "rough" on the edges. It needs to be perfected. Looks cool though, I think.

I referenced a picture of supermodel, Omahyra Mota. She played Arclight in X-Men: The Last Stand.

Girls in Dress... Painted-ish

This part was totally unplanned...

After finishing what came out to be the previous post (2 girls in dress), I exported the file into Photoshop. Then, I selected one color of the image at a time and painted it using one of the brushes. I also used the burn + dodge tool to enhance the colors. And it came out like what you see there. It's pretty cool, I think. I always wondered how to create that flat-textured-painted look, and I ended up actually achieving it here. Well, kinda.

Well, not really... This was ALL done in Illustrator. Not free hand but with the pen tool... which took longer cuz I wasn`t used to it. But the angles were crisp and sharp. It's not done yet... but i think its lookin' good. Colors need to be fixed, though.

Filipiniana, Modernized...

I've been sketching different looks inspired by Filipiniana (an aspect of traditional Philippine fashion). But I never completed anything. Just sketches. Today, I tried finalizing one.

I did these pieces straight on the wacom... which was a bit hard and weird in a way. I only just color with the tablet... drawing on it . I'm used to the pencil-paper contact. It didn't come out as good as I hope. The first is a straight-out illustration. The other is the color guide and the front-and-back key. Can you tell I like Project Runway? Lol.

I don't really know what the future has in store for me. But I wanna keep pursuing this kind of "fashion"-inspired illustrations...

Like the others, these were all sketched out with col-erase pencil, scanned, and were digitally cleaned up. I painted them with Photoshop using the Multiply- Brush Opacity combination... in Wacom (Way-com? WAH-cowm? whatever...) tablet. Illustrating these is pretty much the highlight of my thesis year. These are the kind of art I like to do and continue to do. It's my biggest passion and I am really pleased of how much my work has evolved since drawing anime and superheroes.

The original sketch took forever... I had to keep pasting papers together. It was a little big.

Drawn in col-erase pencils, scanned, cleaned up in photoshop, and CG-colored. He's part of my the mock fashion ads in my thesis. This artwork looks great as a stand-alone.

Here are some of the sketches I did for my "fashion illustrations" from my film and the CG-painted counterparts...

They were supposed to look like fashion ads when layered together. But I never got around to doing that... so I never accomplished the look I was going for, which was the absurdity of most fashion ads. You know, the ones where like, in a group of 6 half clothed- models, there's one person that's naked for no reason. Here they are as separates.

Quickies, Paint & Ink...

I haven't been really drawing since I finished my thesis... which was about 2 months ago... I've been sketching designs, but nothing finished... These two are my quick illustrations I did the other day:

I don't really know how to paint with acrylics. I haven't done so since HS. But this was just a little practice. I painted right on some sketches on my sketchbook. The end product was this little squid thing. I messed up with the line and bubbles. The other one is a quick marker sketch. It started as a face study... and then a body study... then I ended up using markers. The end product was a Shaolin Monk. If you look on the side of this piece closely, you'll see some of the design sketches... I dunno if anyone gets it.
